Anti-gay Christian nut family on TV3

The anti-gay Christian nut family from Mayo (previously) who set up camp outside the Dáil during the Civil Partnership Bill debates were interviewed on TV3's morning show. Or at least, the parents and one of the sons was. It's hard to watch, partly because it's so sad (especially watching the son), but also because it's aggravating - and boring - hearing the same Christian rubbish spouted, and unfortunately not being tackled hard enough. Though it is odd hearing this stuff from otherwise regular-seeming Irish folk. The Irish accent just seems wrong for this kind of crap.

Anyway, watch it if you can bear it. It's the first ten minutes or so of this clip.

    (thanks Ray Lee)

Your son will come out tomorrow, no actually he won't, he'll live a miserable life because he was brought up to hate himself! Shame on them.

He's a lil bit of a royde, I wouldn't kick him out of bed for saying novenas. Oh and awful stuff, terrible terrible.

Oh I turned it off as soon as I heard they were taigs like the rest of us.

"It's a great thing to know what is right and wrong", it is also a great thing to be able to think for yourself.

Wow. The flares on that suit! Something tells me they were wearing those very same outfits when they conceived their son at one of those groovy Christian meetings they spoke about. Frankly, if everyone had 10 children, THAT's what would bring the world to ruin. If you ask me, she's probably loved her neighbours a little TOO much - if you know what I'm saying...

The son talking about everyone having inclinations... I bet he does.

It's handy to see them embarrass themselves on national television - saves us having to make a show of them. Sybil and Martin were polite and let them blather on about the bible and totally alienate the viewers. I bet most people either zoned out or were rolling their eyes at the "religious nutters". More of this, please!

...reaction formation anyone? as much as we oppose their opinions, i fail to see the harm in having extremist loolahs on telly showing what the face of homophobia in ireland looks like. If anything, anyone who saw that(and paid any attention to it) could have taken a step back to reevaluate their own opinions on civil partnership; so many people hold or defend views half hartedly, and you certainly wouldn't want to be associated with people like the Bourkes. Hopefully it made a few people reconsider. That, and at least the presenters were openly opposed to their views, which i doubt is something that you would have seen ten or twenty years ago on irish tv.

If you wanted to write a satire, just copy this down word for word. Why presenters don't challenge the "religion" aspect of this, always gets my nut. Apart from Gerry Ryan (may he rest in peace), I've yet to hear a presenter in this country actively understand issues like this. For example, Martin and Sybil - The mother lists Hindu as part of the religions that rely on the scriptures. Em... no. Christianity, Islam and Judaism - and their off-shoots - are the only three world religions that at their basic roots stem from the same kernal of scriptures. Hindu definitely ain't one of them. Pluck at the stupidity of the uneducated shite that comes out of their mouths.

this is the question they should have asked: what would you say if, in ten minutes time, your husband told you he was gay?

    • Posted By Michael 16 Jul 2010 22:41

@david -Agreed. I think its disgraceful that they are given a voice like this. Why the hell? Why them? Do they deserve to be heard? Above so many other worthy causes? Shame on the program, not impressed with the producers or the presenters. Its disgusting and a waste airtime and money. Side note - the TV3 morning show had the lesbian couple (names escape me) with their 2 sons on recently - that was very well done.

I couldn't watch it all, i kept on thinking of the mother in Stephen King's Carrie, i really think these poorly presented tv shows give people like the burkes a platform that they do not deserve and a free publicity ad for the many that believe in what they preach,

"Travellers................... they like to travel perhaps" and with that she showed the level of her argument

HAHA. Wow, my gaydar is going absolutely nuts when looking at that young lad. The parents are evil though, that mother is absolutely hateful. But the video is rather hilarious otherwise. Shame on Martin and Sybil and the gays in the production office.

I actually think that Séan seems like a bit of a nelly himself and that he is practising the closeted gay technique of denouncing homosexuality in an attempt to detract any suspicion.

Oh dear. I've few words. Shockingly bad challenge on the part of the presenters really.
