If you're Catholic, here's another fella to make you real proud

This is 83 year old Chilean Cardinal Jorge Medina Estévez, who thinks being gay is "is a defect, as if one lacked an eye, a hand, a foot", and having gay sex is "immoral". But not to worry, "like alcoholics" you can overcome this tendency by "discipline, education, or reeducation." And just for good measure, if you're a gay Catholic and want to become a priest (obviously, none of you dirty women!) well, don't, because "ordination to the diaconate and the priesthood of homosexual men or men with homosexual tendencies is absolutely inadvisable and imprudent and, from the pastoral point of view, very risky. A homosexual person, or one with a homosexual tendency is not, therefore, fit to receive the sacrament of Holy Orders."

    Catholic Culture has the report.

I really have difficulty understanding how there are any gay Catholics left. They hate you! They don't want you! You are an unwelcome member of a club the despises your very being. Have you considered Anglicanism? Or Shamanism? Or Dolly Parton?

Check out the commments after the report: "The gay community (sic) can react with indignation all it wants just as the alcoholic community and other serious addictive and compulsive disordered communities can, but anyone denying that homosexuality is a massive compulsive disorder is living on Pluto." or "Thank you, Cardinal Medina, for speaking the eternal truth in season and out of season!" I think it's time for a letter from the archbishop. I don't care if he gets hurt.

@Peter Leaving the Catholic Church via countmeout.ie is as easy and painless as a back, sack and crack wax; you'll feel like a new man after it. You even get a nice letter from the Archbishop at the end telling you how hurt he is.

I often wonder about this, particularly also about women and the Church, but I keep coming back to it being this family and culutral thing. There's 'the Church' - as in the hierarchy, the Vatican, the Pope - and then there's 'the Church' as in your family and your community. People want to belong to the latter, and so remain 'Catholic' because it is one thing that keeps the in line with their immediate peers. To step away from the Church formally or in a very public way would I think for some represent a breaking of a bond from the local culture they grew up in. I keep hesitating for this very fact whenever I look at countmeout.ie. I know it's not rational but people really aren't rational. It's something the hierarchy should bear in mind though when they consider their position in all this...there is a remarkable disconnect between Catholicism on a local and personal level, and Catholicism at an institutional level, and not nearly just among the gays. I'd guess most people are out of step with the institutional catholic church whilst still wearing the catholic badge.

I have great difficulty understanding the gay Catholic thing too. I think it's a community thing; they don't see their local priest as hating them. And there's a good chance he doesn't. But they ignore the big picture that the man in charge of the church openly hates and despises them.

A Dr. Mary Condren wrote an opinion piece in the Irish Times on Monday regarding women and the Catholic Church. http://www.irishtimes.com it really makes you wonder how/why women stick with the Catholic church, given its stance on them.
