My earlier post about Karl Lagerfeld prompted a few of you to send me some fun Karl related stuff.
First Margaret Cho doing a funny bit about him, and then a fun clip in which Karl interviews himself. It actually made me like him a little bit more!
(thanks Mister Ebby, Ciarán, Mark)

I've always been deeply suspicious of Karl Largerfeld. I've always thought he looks like a pompous eejit and why would you want someone who looks like that to design your expensive clothes? Sure, I want my designers to look creative, maybe a little colourfully odd-ball, but he looks nothing like that. He looks both ridiculous and boring, and that's quite difficult to achieve. And when your whole job is about how people look, that's not a good look.
Of course it suits the fashion business to pretend that there are only a small number of really incredible fashion geniuses who are so incredibly talented and unusual that they can rarely ever be replaced. Every now and then, on very rare occasions, some young talent is allowed to be raised on to the fashion alter and they too are thereafter presented as one of these incredibly rare gods.
Of course it's bullshit. There are many many super-talented designers and it's a combination of all sorts of factors - including luck and shrewdness and deals with the devil (in Prada) - that leaves one in the middle ranks while another is elevated to the fashion firmament.
I found that particularly galling during the John Galliano scandal. A lot of people, including some of my friends, defended him and his gross behaviour arguing that he should essentially be allowed to behave like a monster because he is so amazingly talented. People that talented, they argued, aren't like mere mortals and shouldn't be judged by the same rules, and if he looses his job the world will be denied beautiful frocks! Beautiful frocks! (This is much the same argument that has always allowed chefs in the restaurant industry to behave like huge cocks, and as an ex-waiter who had to deal with asshole chefs I have absolutely no time for that argument)
But it's such bullshit. The truth is there are hundreds if not thousands of other designers just as talented as John Galliano, they just haven't, for various reasons, managed to have the opportunities - and luck - that he has. One of the problems being that he was filling one of the very few, much coveted places at fashions' top table.
And now that he's gone? Well, there are still plenty of beautiful frocks.
And if there really are only a tiny handful of designers talented enough to have a place at the top table, what are the chances that one of those spectacular, rare, and unique talents would also happen to be the daughter of a Beatle?
But as I said, it suits the business of fashion to perpetrate the myth of this cabal of awesomely talented, irreplaceable design gods whose work mere mortals can purchase for giant price tags. Which is fine - and even fun - if you take it all with a huge pinch of salt and don't drink the fashion Kool-Aid.
Anyway, my point is... (what was my point?? oh yeah, Karl Lagerfeld!)... Karl Largerfeld is one of those designers who was long ago elevated to fashion's heighest heights and everyone has to pretend that he's not a huge tosser when it's absolutely clear that he's not just a huge tosser, he's at tosserdom's top table! Everytime he opens his mouth mine falls open in disbelief. The fashion crowd loves to love his tweets, perhaps with a slight sense of irony, when what what they should be is howling with laughter, and occasionally aghast.
Recently Karl was interviewed by Bruce LaBruce (Canadian gay filmmaker, photographer, writer, sometime pornographer, and cult figure) for Vice magazine. The whole thing is worth a read - you'll be shaking your head in dissbelief, laughing out loud, and wanting to give them both a good slap - but the Guardian has helpfully gone through it and pulled out some of the choicer quotes.

Matthew Rettenmund is an American novelist, magazine writer and blogger. He has written for many pop magazines, and is steeped in the pop music business. He is also one of Madonna's biggest and most well known fans. It's not unfair to say he's obsessed. He has written well received books about her, has a vast collection of memorabilia, constantly blogs about her and her career, is on first name terms with her publicist Liz, and there is nothing he doesn't know about her. Nothing! He has interected with Madonna from a slight remove in the past - he recently got to ask a single question from a wall of press behind a press line on a red carpet - but he has never properly met her before. And if you read his blog, you quickly know that meeting her is, and always has been, one of his life's greates ambitions. And considering how large a part she has played in his life and career it has always seemed almost unfair that he never had. You feel he deserves to.
Even if you are a Madonna hater, his account of finally getting to meet his obsession, his idol, is a fun read. You can just feel his excitement. I guess I kinda feel that I know him just from reading his blog for a good while, so I'm oddly happy for him.

This clip of a ballboy at the Australian Open making a great catch off Roger Federer's racquet has been viewed over ten million times in the last few days. Must be a really exciting few days for the kid.

But just in case you haven't already seen Kermit and Miss Piggy at a London press conference promoting their new movie being asked about the Fox News pundit who accused the movie, and the Muppets, of pushing "a liberal agenda"...
