As someone who doesn't smoke hash anymore because it just doesn't suit me (it doesn't make me giddy and giggly or interested in things - it makes me dull and lethargic and unproductive and slightly stressed because every tiny thing seems like such a huge hassle) I personally have no interest in seeing it legalised. However, I recognise that there are strong arguments in favour of legalisation, and it's patently obvious that prohibition simply doesn't work.
But regardless of your feelings on the matter, and despite the Pollyanna-ish view of marajuana in this little short, it's a very cute piece of animation.

Joe, who is running the comedy night on Mondays downstairs in Pantibar, is looking to form a new comedy/improv troupe that would use Pantibar as it's base. If you are interested in getting involved, e-mail him: jtkearney@gmail.com

The Gay Games kicks off in Cologne today, and Irish Shamrocks FC, one of Dublin's two gay soccer teams, are sporting a (rather large!) Pantibar logo on their shirts as they compete in the soccer. Good luck to them, and indeed the rest of Team Ireland. You can follow the progress of the Irish competitors HERE.

Penny's fella Bruno is staying with us this weekend, and I worry that he's not getting enough religious instruction at home, so Penny and I took him to "The Pope's Cross".

Historian of all things gay and Irish Tonie Walsh sent me this:
Recently clearing out old stuff, I came across an interview I did with De Janet, a Belgian gay mag, that included photos from the condom picket I organised at the Vatican embassy during Pride week 1987. The picket (of five) was held, you'll recall, in the context of Rome resolutely denying condom use even as AIDS lay waste to our beloveds.
I've a delicious memory of giving out red stripe rubbers to over-eager, hormonal secondary students on the Navan Road, conscious that the very exchange was illegal!
And check out the Cardinal Ratzinger poster! Way ahead of the curve was the impossibly fresh-faced Tonie.

Obviously PETA know what they're doing, because who hasn't heard of them or what they're about? But their campaigns often leave me cold because they always look like ironic fashion shoots to me. This latest stunt in Times Square is a case in point - gorgeous models with perfect bodies in fake blood. Wouldn't this have been much more effective if they'd used regular folk with irregular bodies? Skinny/fat/blotchy/ordinary. And more realistic. The pale, anemic bit of chicken in the fridge in Tescos didn't come from a prize-winning super-chicken, it came from a battery farmed scrawny thing that had to be injected with water to make it presentable.
And I say this as a meat eater - though one who struggles with my conscience over it. However it's not PETA campaigns that make me struggle with it. Maybe it's because I'm not American. Their campaigns always seem so Californian or something. They're using the polished language of advertising and movies, but that doesn't connect with me on any visceral level. It's just another episode of America's Next Top Model.

Anne Rice has announced on her Facebook that she is leaving Christianity, because she refuses to be anti-gay, anti-feminist, and anti-artificial birth control.
Rice was brought up Catholic, but left the Church at 18. However in 1998, she returned Catholicism, and though she has written about her difficulties with a lot of the Church's teachings on social issues, her's was a "born again" kind of return - lot's of Bible quotes and committing herself to Christ etc. Indeed, in October 2004, Rice announced in a Newsweek article that she would henceforth "write only for the Lord," and true to her word, her next two books were Christ the Lord: Out of Egypt, and Christ the Lord: The Road to Cana.
She remains a fan of Jesus, but has opted out of Christianity.

Now if she would just go back to being an atheist she might actually write something that someone cares about again. Hands up anyone who's read Christ The Lord: Out of Egypt. Anyone? No? Didn't think so.
