Must be exciting for the kid

This clip of a ballboy at the Australian Open making a great catch off Roger Federer's racquet has been viewed over ten million times in the last few days. Must be a really exciting few days for the kid.

"You can't say that on television!"

This winning horse trainer has big plans for his celebrations tonight, and he's only too happy to tell RTE about it on live TV.

    (thanks Lar)

Pretty regular Saturday for me today

Spent the day hanging out down the local boxing club with the huge rides from the all Ireland champion Dublin football team. Just getting in a bit of sparring, you know? And if you are wondering why I'm wearing a moustache, well, my incredibly hot femininity can be a bit distracting for "the lads" when they are trying to batter me round the ring, so I wear the moustache to tone down my womanliness a notch.

I did feel a little self conscious though. Does my ring look big in this?

Later on, a couple of oiled up male models decided they wanted a bit of Panti's ring action too, and who am I to disappoint them?

It was all in aid of a good cause and I'll post the finished product when it's done.

There'll never be an out gay football player as long as there are football fans

This article from the Guardian's 'Secret Footballer' is a few months old but I missed it then.

It's a smart and revealing piece that argues that while not a lot has changed since Justin Fashnu, but that a gay premiership player would have few if any problems in the changing room. It's the terraces that keep players in the closet.

"The reality is that I don't "officially" know any gay footballers, although I suspect I have been only a Jäger bomb or two away from a team-mate confiding in me. What we are all agreed on, however, is that there is principally one very good reason that gay players would keep their sexual allegiance firmly in the locker: the fans."

    Article.

    Gay warrior type sought

Dublin's gay rugby club, the Emerald Warriors will be chosing a rugger bugger to represent them in this year's Mr Gay Ireland contest at The Panti Show on Sept 24th. The contestants will need some encouragement, and picking a winner will be a difficult and durrty job that I'll need you to help me with. I know it's a lot to ask...

Apparently this is a real girl with a real ball...

... though I have my doubts. I'm not entirely convinced that Industrial Light & Magic weren't involved.

The most amazing thing about this performance by a Bulgarian gymnast in 2008 that has caught the attention of the internet recently? She only came second! What the hell can the winning girl do?

Testosterone, booze, mob mentality, and (mostly) heterosexual alpha-male-ism

I think think the insane Vancouver hockey riot is why gay men are generally less interested in team/field sports than straight men. I say "generally" because I know there are plenty of gay football/rugby etc fans, but the fact is that gay men as a group are less interested.

When I was a kid I never liked having to play football in school. Not because I was un-sporty - though for years I thought i was because the only sports the school pushed the boys to play were field sports, and it wasn't until I discovered other sports like swimming or athletics that I even discovered I was actually athletic - but because the atmosphere of the game excluded me. Field sports encourage an aggressive alpha-male attitude and team (read "mob") mentality, that regularly bubbles over in to petty violence on the pitch, and occasionally in the stands. It many ways it mirrors the kind of aggressively heterosexual male atmosphere of Saturday night city centres that we gays are properly wary of. It's an atmosphere that is unwelcoming to anything "other", and in particular to gay people.

And I'm not saying that there is no place in the world for alpha-male, aggressively competitive male bonding - I'm just saying that it's not a comfortable place for gay men.

Whenever I find myself in a crowd of male sports fans, whether on the streets, on a train, or in a stadium, particularly when booze and excitement in is the air, even when the atmosphere is  jolly and good-natured, it's always all too easy to see how given the right trigger, things could change. That mob aggression is always vaguely tangible beneath the surface, even just in the jolly chanting, the slagging off of the other team, the wolf whistling. Even the tribal wearing of the team jerseys, thousands of people broadcasting their allegiance to a single entity, makes me queasy. There's a reason armies are put in uniforms.

And I stress that I think there is definitely a role for that kind of testosterone driven aggression and competition - it's very often what has pushed civilization forward - but that doesn't mean I have to like it's sporting expression.

Anyway, here's a jaw-dropping video of what happens when booze, testosterone, competitiveness, aggression, alpha-male idiocy, and I suspect, summer heat, are combined in just the right measure.

Reader Lar, who was himself caught up in the insanity, sent me this picture of one of the rioters. Would make you proud to be Irish.

Lar also pointed out however, that very early the next morning, the decent citizens of Vancouver, appalled and embarrassed at what had happened over a stupid hockey game, came out in force to clean up the city.

Ben Cohen - working very hard to get every gay in the world to love him

If you've ever visited his Facebook page you'll know that most of the world's gays already adore him, but if there are any stragglers, his campaign against homophobic bullying should sweep them up.

    I've sunk to a new l'eau...

... and it's called The Bitter Tears Of Panti Bliss and will be drunk by the players during the Irish International GLTA (Gay & Lesbian Tennis Association) Tournament which is taking place this weekend.

No seriously. We're the water sponsor. Look, I can prove it.

Organised by Out4Tennis, the tournament takes place over the long weekend, from Saturday April 30th, to Monday May 2nd. The tournament is sanctioned by the Gay & Lesbian Tennis Alliance (GLTA), with players from all around Europe, the US and, of course, Ireland. In addition, there is a social programme every evening, and everyone is welcome.

The main tennis venue is Mount Pleasant LTC, located a short distance from Ranelagh LUAS stop. In addition, matches will be played in other tennis clubs in the Dublin 4 & Dublin 6 areas.

There is no charge for spectators and everyone is welcome to participate in the social events over the weekend. Info HERE.
