If you have a spare $400,000 you could buy me a 2 hundred year old jeweled automaton caterpillar

This gorgeous, incredibly rare, and fantastic bejeweled automaton "Ethiopian" caterpillar (which excites the child in me who would be glued to The Thief of Bagdad on TV) was made in 1820, probably by Swiss master "mechanician" Henri Maillaredet, and is being auctioned by Sotheby's in Geneva with a guide price of around $400,000. If I was obscenely rich I'd be on the phone whispering to my bidding agent - actually going and waving a paddle is so declassé don't you know.

    As the Sotheby's catalogue says:

"The body realistically designed to represent a caterpillar comprising eleven jointed ring segments, framed by seed pearls, and decorated with translucent red enamel over an engine-turned ground, studded overall with gold-set rubies, turquoise, emeralds, and diamonds. The underside is decorated with champlevé black enamel. When the automaton movement is engaged, the caterpillar crawls realistically, its body moving up and down simulating the undulations of a caterpillar by means of a set of gilt-metal knurled wheels."

Feel free to get it for me. It's my birthday soon, and it would count as my Xmas pressie too. A two for one deal!

After I get a river and a tree...

... I'm going to get one of these hanging "Nestrest" loungers. (The people who make it also make these glamorous sun loungers for rich people)

By the way... how did he get in there?

    Lovely posters for Black Swan

Fox Searchlight have released a limited edition of four vintage looking teaser posters for the new Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis ballet/horror/thriller movie Black Swan (which features some lesbian sex between the two leads, Ladies!).

You can see all four HERE, but these two are my favourites.

    Sign of the times

Lovely short documentary about master sign-writer David A Smith and the dying art of hand crafted reverse glass signs and decorative silvered and gilded mirrors.

Inflatable helmet for fashion conscious cyclists

The two models above are wearing a Hövding, a new kind of helmet for cyclists designed by two Swedish designers that was launched recently. It's designed to be unobtrusive and not mess up your hair-do while riding stylishly around the city (it comes in different fabrics), and works similarly to an air bag in a car - a sensor detects unusual movement in the event of an accident and inflates the protective hood. You can see a video of the helmet being tested below.

    (via davidreport)

Of course, if you're a gymnast, you don't need a helmet because you can just fling yourself off your bike (or in this case, speeding motorbike) do a summersault, land on your feet, and then calmly walk back to survey the wreckage of your bike. That at least, is the story being told about this footage, though it looks to me more like he was flung off his bike rather than leaping. Either way, to land on your feet and be so apparently cool about it is pretty remarkable.

Video-mapping projection on Prague's medieval clock

We've seen some of these video-mapping projections before, and here's another impressive one, celebrating the 600th anniversary of Prague's famous astronomical clock.

    Food porn

I've posted Carl Warner's food landscapes before, and here are a couple of new ones.

In the one above, the the cacti are gherkins and prickly pears, the covered wagon is breadsticks and tortilla wrap with onion ring and pretzel wheels, and the cowboys are avocado pears wrapped in bacon.

The riverscape above includes soya yellow bean, cinnamon stick, dried lotus seeds and herbs, with physalis lanterns and a noodle floor, and bok choy and Savoy cabbage landscape. Of course.

    More HERE.

    (thanks Buzz)

    The levytator

A London professor has invented the first curved escalator, which, oddly, seems like something that was invented ages ago, but apparently not.
