Delicious new addition to Capel St

Even before we opened Pantibar, Capel St was always one of my favourite parts of Dublin. I love the streets livliness and it's great mix. The old traditional Capel St enterprises - the hardware stores, the furniture and upholstry shops, the workwear and uniform shops, the antique and second hand shops, the camping shops and Army & Navy stores, the rubber stamp shop, the model making shop, the tailors, Romano's the great family Italian restaurant, Fuscardi's the chipper... - cheek by jowl with the newer shops, the myriad Asian restaurants, the Eastern European supermarkets, the Polish cake shop, the sex shops... Capel St always feels like a world unto itself. Anything you want is available on the street, and there's a great energy about it.

And while Capel St, like the rest of the city has certainly felt the recession with closures and some empty shop fronts, it never feels defeated or down because new enterprises crop up all the time.

One of the newest is Musashi, a really delicious new Japanese restaurant that opened a few weeks ago a few doors down from Pantibar. And not only is the food great (they do it all - sushi, noodles, tempura, dumplings, katsu, rice dishes...) it's also cheerrfully priced and the interior is really cute. And it's BYOB so you can come out of there stuffed and well watered for €20.

    Check it out.

Here's a few pics from when I was there the other night with a large group.

Unfortunately I wasn't quick enough off the mark with the camera before the beautiffuly presented sushi platter was demolished!

"Up to €500,000" rescued from head shop fire

According to The Sunday Times the Gardaí are working under the assumption that the fire was started deliberately. They also report that "up to €500,000" was rescued by firemen from a safe in the shop, and that the owner is being "offered security advice" as suspicion falls on anti-drug groups or dissident republican groups. Yikes!

I saw the owner today - understandably, he did not look happy. But Good Dolly! Exactly how much money were they raking in? I mean, the place was always busy, especially late at night at weekends, but €500,000! Even allowing for exaggeration, that is a serious amount of cash.

UP to €500,000 was rescued from a safe in the basesment of a head shop on Dublin’s Capel Street that was destroyed in a fire on Friday morning.

Firefighters found the money while tackling the blaze. The gardai are investigating the possibility that it was started deliberately by parents whose teenage children had consumed legal highs purchased from the store.

Detectives are offering security advice to Jim Bellamy, the owner of the Nirvana head shop. Gardai believe petrol may have been used as an accelerant in the blaze, which spread to two adjoining shops.

Gardai in other parts of Dublin have stepped up patrols in shopping districts with head shops amid concerns that they will be targeted. There are concerns that the shops, their owners and staff may become the focus of a campaign by dissident republicans or anti-drugs activists in the coming months.

The Real IRA shot the owner of a head shop in Derry last month, claiming responsibility for the attack by using a cover name. The victim was seriously injured. The paramilitary group has since warned the owners of other head shops in Northern Ireland that they must close down.

    Sign Of The Times

I'd hate to see the non-luxury single beds!

This is the odd little shop across the lane from Pantibar, which sells cheap furniture, washing machines, and property in Eastern Europe. Honest! You can pick up a top-loader, a "luxury" single bed, and a ramshackle house on 3 acres only an hour from Tirana.

But the real sign of the times is that the "luxury" bed sign has replaced one that for the last few years encouraged you to "take advantage of the exchange rate" and invest in a time-share in the USA.
