I finally saw I Love You Phillip Morris over Christmas, about the gay con-man and infamous prison escapee who escaped from prison in the US four times, essentially for love. I knew it was based on a true story, but untill I read this interview with Steven Russell (played by Jim Carey in the movie) I hadn't realised quite how true it was. I had assumed they had embellished his escapes for dramatic purposes, especially his gob-smacking final escape, but no - it was all true.

The last time my hometown of Ballinrobe Co Mayo was in the news was when a bull ran amok in a local supermarket and the video went viral around the world. But this time Ballinrobe is in the news because a dozen men armed with "slash hooks" ran amok in the local church this afternoon during a Confirmation mass for 90 school kids, chasing and attacking a man in who was attending the Confirmation.
The report in the Mayo News says the incident is "believed to be the result of an ongoing feud between two families in the area" and though it doesn't say so, I assume it's a feud between two Traveller families. Ballinrobe has a large Traveller population, but I assume it's a Traveller feud simply because of the reference to "slash hooks". I have never ever heard the term "slash hook" in my life except in reports of Traveller feuds. What exactly is a slash hook anyway, and why would someone have one? I think settled families would be more likely to use baseball bats or a shotgun or something. I know a few queens who could do you some serious damage at a Confirmation with a stiletto, but I don't think most queens would know a slash hook if they sat on one.
The other thing in the report that jumps out at me is the fact that "armed Gardaí were on the scene within minutes". What were armed Gardaí doing hanging around near a Confirmation mass? Unless they suspected there might be trouble maybe.
Jaysus. Ballinrobe has gotten fierce wild altogether so it has.

Last week a few people sent me this gruesome and awful clip of an African man being beaten to death and burned by a mob, supposedly because he was gay. I warn you, it is really disturbing. To be honest I couldn't watch more than a tiny bit of it.
However, the details were difficult to pin down - it's on various sites and they don't all agree on where it is, or why the man was murdered so horribly. Many say he was murdered for being gay, but some others say he was accused of being a thief. Even where the video was shot is not very clear, with some saying it's Uganda, though most saying it's Nigeria. (You would imagine that should be relatively easy to clear up by the language being spoken). And even after a week, there seems to be no greater clarity.
However I am bringing it to your attention because, as I said, most sites are claiming it is another example of the terrible anti-gay witch hunts taking place across Africa. Hopefully it will become clearer in time.
Regardless of the reason, it's shocking and terrifying that something like this can even happen at all.
But be warned - the video is horrible so proceed with caution.

Obviously blackmailing anybody over anything is horrible, but I have to admitt I find it pretty difficult to rustle up much sympathy for the priests in this story. I have difficulty rustling up much sympathy for anyone who choses freely to become a priest anyway, but if you are gay and become a priest, well, seriously... WTF? Would you ever cop yourself on and (to use a somewhat sexist expression that seems appropriate when talking about the Church) grow a pair. And then go find a therapist and see if they can help you figure out why you hate yourself and have no mind of your own.
Hands up anyone who has come across those self hating gay priests/seminarians who are always fucked up over sex, running around being total whores and hating themselves for it, and terrified that someone will find out? Just like the priests in this story? Yeah. Thought so. Almost everyone who has been around the gay block for any length of time.

Trementino, a despatch rider, told Panorama through his lawyer that he had initially been seduced by a priest who he had delivered a parcel to and had sex with soon after they exchanged phone numbers. The priest had made regular payments to him via Postpay "often of his own free will" and had offered to buy him a car, Tremonti claimed.
The priest reported Trementino to police in May but he meanwhile met another priest on the social networking website Facebook. Trementino claimed to have spent three days with the priest in a hotel in Rome during a conference, and said the priest paid for his rail ticket and gave him 300 euros "to buy canabis, alcohol, condoms and lubricants".
Trementino claimed he was soon inundated with erotic messages and requests for sex from "dozens" of priests with whom he came into contact on Facebook and Messenger.
"I would begin to speak to them using dirty talk and they would get undressed and masturbate," he said. "I would get up to five requests a day, and even had one from France" he said.
"Asking them for money was a way of filtering the requests, which had got out of hand, he said, adding that he became "disgusted" by the priests' "absurd" and "asphixiating" needs.

David Kato, a gay rights activist who was one of the people featured in a horrifying article in a Ugandan paper last year, has been beaten to death with a hammer in his home. The newspaper printed his picture and personal details like his address and called for he and the other 100 "top homos" to be hanged. The article sparked international outrage but the editor of the paper remained unrepentant. A number of the people featured in the article have since been attacked and forced in to hiding.
Responding to news of the murder, the editor said:
"If he has been murdered, that's bad and we pray for his soul. There has been a lot of crime, it may not be because he is gay. We want the government to hang people who promote homosexuality, not for the public to attack them. We said they should be hanged, not stoned or attacked."

In June 1981 a Japanese student living in Paris murdered a Dutch woman named Renée Hartevelt and spent three days eating various parts of her body. Shortly after dumping the rest of her body he was arrested, and declared insane and unfit for trial, and was incarcerated in a mental institution in Paris. However only five years later he was a free man, a best selling author, and a celebrity in Japan.
It's an incredible story which has been written about extensively, and been the subject of numerous documentaries.

If you're gay and have been to Rome in the last few years, especially in the summer, you likely know the little "gay street" beside the Colosseum where the gays hang out in the balmy weather outside the couple of bars. Last summer there was a spate of homophobic attacks, and now a gang has been arrested, suspected of giving drugged wine to at least fifty tourists and then robbing them. They were finally arrested after an American man died after being drugged and robbed.
