If you read the article that I linked to last week suggesting that sugar is the root of all evil and then spent your easter weekend demolishing chocolate eggs, you may be hoping someone is going to come to sugar's defense and say it's not all bad actually. Well, this article in the Huffington Post does just that. Or at least tries to. To my mind it starts off badly and at first does nothing to restore any confidence in your sugary treats, but does eventually make some solid arguments.
Still though, I'm going to be attempting to watch my sugar intake. You do what you like.

I'm a sugar addict and always have been. Until quite recently i used to add lots of sugar to tea and coffee, I'm a sucker for desserts and cakes and ice cream and toffee, and I can't pass chocolate without making love to it. Chocolate is my real sweet melting downfall. Though luckily I've never been big on fizzy drinks. Thank Dolly for small mercies!
However I've been lucky that I've never really had to worry too much about my weight - I got my Dad's skinny genes and I like being active - but when I hit 40 I did notice a certain "softness" that I'd never had before, so I started being a bit more disciplined about exercise and my diet, and high on my list was cutting back on sugar. And i have... but still can't resist chocolate's siren call and still succumb to delicious chocolaty melty sugary binges. Mmmmmmmm........
However, if I had any doubt that cutting down my sugar consumption was a good thing, then this article in the New York Times put paid to that. It makes for sobering reading if you have a sweet tooth (and even if you think you don't).
The author argues (fairly convincingly to my mind) that sugar is not bad for us merely because it's empty calories and bad for our teeth, but is in fact a toxin which may very well be the root cause of many of our chronic ailments: obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and many common cancers.
Read it and you'll never look at a can of Coke in the same way again.

Well, I don't know what you know about fitness but that's the claim made by this article in Mens Journal, which is an interesting read for any of you who go to the gym regularly.
