Eight minutes of monster madness in Tokyo

If, like me, you like monster movies and/or Japan, then this eight minutes will be up your monstrous alley. Don't worry about not understanding the voice over - it's all about the visuals.

For the cat lady that has everything

Lots of Japanese girls (like my bestie Hiroko) have a thing for cats, as a minute on YouTube can confirm, but even for cat-lovin' Japan this is nuts. The "Tailly" is a cat tail you wear with a sensor in the belt that measures your heart rate and swings the tail appropriately.

Though it'd be fun to sell them at One Direction concerts.

    Toyota ad starring transgender model

Though apparently only for the Japanese market, this ad for the Toyota Corolla or Auris as it's known in Japan) features beautiful Ukranian model Stav Strashko, who identifies as transgender. At the end of the ad the Japanese tag line says, "Not trendy, not casual, not for everyone", or words to that effect.

Unlike some of the recent controversial ads here which have used transgender (or in the Meteor case, at least crossdressing) characters as the butt of jokes, this ad doesn't. The model is there to suggest beauty and intriguing or alluring difference - not sniggering.

    Only in Japan

Making a mini hamburger meal, including fries and cola, using a kit that you just ad water to. It's oddly fascinating. According to the YouTube uploader:

    (1) It is edible. No artificial colours. No preservatives. This kit contains pork and chicken ingredients. 96 calories.
    (2) It tastes like real hamburger, bread, cheese, ketchup, french fries and cola. It was delicious.
    (3) It cost me 258 yen.

16 yr old Swedish boy is Japanese girl pop star

The pretty Japanese girl above, Yohio, is actually a 16 year old Swedish boy who is signed to Universal Muaic Japan and already hs a cult following among Japanese teenage girls. Though his sound is not what you might expect - he sings like a boy and plays slashing rock guitar.

Describing himself as a "bishonen" - a Japanese word meaning "beautiful youth (boy)", Yohio prides himself on his doll-like features.

According to his blog on Japanese social networking site AMEBA, the Swedish teen became interested in Japanese culture when he was introduced to Anime at the age of ten.

He then developed an interest in learning the language, and started reading Japanese blogs and following Japanese celebrities on Twitter.
After starting a Swedish Visual Kei band called Seremedy he was signed to Universal Music Japan and quickly developed a cult following because of his beauty.

Check out the first single from his album.

    Rent a boyfriend

My friend Will just sent me this clip and it took me a second to realise, "Oh right. This would seem weird to people".

Hostess bars in Japan are very common. They are bars where customers - mostly businessmen - pay for young women's company. The women chat to them, laugh at their jokes, pour their (expensive) drinks, and essentially massage their egos. When I lived in Japan many of my non-Japanese friens worked part-time in hostess bars because not only were they considered exotic by customers, but customers also saw it as an opportunity to practise their conversational English. While there definitely were plenty of dodgy hostess bars, and some were a bit seedy, in general there was no stigma attached. They are a legitimate business in Japan and being a hostess is a legitimate job. We may find it a bit odd, but this is Japan, land of the geisha. Essentially, hostess bars are the cheap version of a geisha house - a luxury out of the reach of the average salary-man. If geisha houses are Michellin-starred silver-service, the hostess bars are McDonalds.

Host bars on the other hand are less usual. You see them in the entertainment areas of big cities, but they are definitely very niche. In Japan, like in the rest of the male dominated world, what's good for the gander is not necessarily good for the goose.

Here's a Japanese report on host bars and the ladies who frequent them.

Isn't it about time we had a revival of the variety show?

ABBA performing on a Japanese TV special. I love everything about this - the costumes, the lip gloss, and that set! Gorgeous! Why can't we have big variety shows anymore?

    (thanks Squirl)

    Fun synchronised walking

We've had Japanese highschool synchronised walking teams on the blog before but this one has a sense of humour about it. Give it a moment to get going.

Though watching this is also slightly unnerving. On the one hand it's really impressive and you can see why this is a society that has been so successful and deals so well with things like the tsunami, but on the other hand it's somewhat frightening and exposes the the element of Japanese society that bloomed into the facist imperialism of the second world war.

    Japanese Spiderman

He had his own series on Japanese TV in the late 70's, and while he looked like our Spiderman, there were lots of differences. For example, his origin story was different and he often piloted a giant fighting robot.
