If I owned that dress I'd keep it in my closet and crack it out again too

Raffaella Carra knows a good show frock, and this is a good show frock. And those sharp shoulders are right on trend now. Fashion should have stopped after this frock because really, what's the point. It's was all down the drag hill from this point.

    Fun Dolly interview

The London Times has a fun interview with Dolly, where among other things she talks about her gays.

One repeated rumour maintains that Dolly’s real other half is her lifelong best friend and PA, Judy Ogle. Dolly repeatedly maintains otherwise. It’s worth noting, even so, that homosexuality is one of the few areas in which Dolly will allow herself to stray into politics. Not so many years ago she was still talking about how much she loved her “sissy fans”, but the fact that her Dollywood theme park has an annual Gay Day is no small deal in rural Tennessee and earned her the ire of, among others, the local Ku Klux Klan. “I’m not a poster child for gay rights by any means,” she says. “But I have so many gay and lesbian friends and they’re just so pure and so true. That’s not politics to me. That’s human rights.”

Just in case you needed another reason to love Dolly more...

... here she is talking about her gay fans, her support for gay marriage, and how she believes religious people (which she is of course. Well, nobody's perfect!) shouldn't judge others.

    Mina

My recent discovery of Raffaella Carra and Adriano Celentano spurred a number of Italian gays to tell me to check out another Italian singer called Mina, and now she is vying for my Italian attentions with La Carra. She's another one I feel we anglo-centrics have been cheated out of, and you can spend hours on YouTube making up for lost years of fabulousness.

I'll ease you in to her with these two. The first video will give you a sense of her amazing style. Some of the looks are incredible. And the second is a simple video of her recording in studio, but her presence and power is amazing. Give it a moment for her to ratchet up the vocal.

We'll be coming back to Mina.

    Raffaella!

We haven't had any Raffaella Carra in a while so here's two. First up is her singing Bonnie Tyler's Total Eclipse. Her voice is all wrong for the song, and the production and arrangement are awful, but, the staging is insane and she looks incredible! That cat-suit, that waist! And the choreography! I gagged when she gets pulled across the floor with her stockinged leg in the air!

And here's another fun clip of Raffaella being sexually assaulted by Oscar winner Roberto Benigni at some event. I have no idea what's going on, but it hardly matters.

Fighting for a better view of the Goddess?

My new obsession with La Carra goes on.

In this clip she's performing at a black-tie event (an awards show? In Spain?) around 1977/78, complete with insane drag moment with her dancers, and a wardrobe malfunction where she gets caught up in a dancers cape, but around the 2:50 mark, a fight breaks out amongst the tuxedo clad guests! It's all very Latin-blooded. Raffaella clocks it and throws a concerned glance before deciding to ignore it.

    Raffaella Carra: Rumore, 1974

Here's the all singing, all dancing, all pink pants-suit version....

... and here's the 'I'm Raffaella Carra and I don't need all the bells and whistles to sell this I just need me and my hair and my rockin' attitude' version.

    Raffaella Carra in English!

Sometimes I really hate how anglo-centric we are. Look at all the fabulousness we miss by only being aware, for the most part, of the English speaking world's popular culture. Raffaella Carra is 66 years old and I only discovered her yesterday! What a waste of the last 40 years!

But I'm making up for lost time.

It turns out though, that I was aware of one of her songs, because she had a hit here in 1978 that I remember, Do It Do It Again, and here she is performing it on Top Of The Pops.

And here's her insanely staged version of Tina Turner's We Don't Need Another Hero.

But this one from Austrian TV is my favourite. Partly because of the mind-blowingly drag-tastic, bat-winged, shoulder-padded sequined outfit that the presenter is wearing (wantsies!!!!!), partly because of the insane lyrics ("Hey you! Say you! I'm a sexy lady!"), and partly because if my maths are correct, Raffaella is 64 yeas old in this clip and check out her moves! The woman is an unstoppable force of sexy nature! Scratch that! The clip says 2007 at the beginning, but the fashion seemed out of whack, and then I see it says 1990 in the title, so she was only 47. Still hot though! But speaking of the beginning of the clip, it seems to be uploaded by her fan club or something, and I love the zany cheap titles and the way it sings her name: "Rafff-aeee-laaa!"

Now excuse me while I use the internet to track down her home address and buy a flight to Rome...

    (thanks BJ)
