The internet is awash with (admittedly some pretty cool) projection mapping on buildings, but this Swiss installation/stop-motion project where students in an old tower block open and close the window shutters is much more satisfying just for being... actual, rather than projected. It's remarably effective.

You may have heard the prank call from a few years ago where someone called Westport and Castlebar garda stations in Mayo and put both the phones together. Someone helpfully made a stop-motion animation of it. They made it back in 2008 and it only has 173 views - before the YouTube boom I suppose.
Being a Mayo woman it still resonates for me...

Here's a Hallowe'en animation for you. It's foulmouthed and gory, like the real Poatman Pat.

This really beautiful, and really hot animation tells the story of Achilles and his intense gay relationship with Patroclus. (My friend Chris turned me on to this after he discovered it after watching the Brad Pitt film on the telly and getting annoyed at how they wimped out on the gay stuff in the story)
The animation itself is exquisite, with beautifully crafted puppets, and the story telling is smart and inventive. It's also fantastically erotic, and the gay sex scenes are quite graphic. You'll never look at a Greek statue in quite the same way.
It was made for Channel 4 in 1995 by Barry Purves (whose work we've had on the blog before, for example his lovely Tchaikovsky film) who describes it as the film he's "most proud of".
"I started to find something racier that could push a few animation boundaries. The confused sexuality of Achilles seemed perfect, but this was a complicated story and one lacking in any obvious animation opportunities. You can't mention Achilles without mentioning Paris, Helen, Hector, Agamemnon and other characters... To do this in eleven minutes seemed worrying... I wondered how to focus on the relationship between Achilles and Patroclus without the others getting in the way. This intense physical relationship developed into the focus of the film, rather than any more Harryhausenesque aspects of the Greek myths. Intimacy had not really been treated seriously with puppets...
The Achilles puppets had cracks added into their skins and green weathering, reinforcing the idea that these are statues, not humans, although people still ask whether they are actors in make-up. One shot in particular, with Achilles on his back drinking, confuses people. I put this down not to great acting but to a credible pose. This film would have worked differently with actors, the nudity becoming an awkward distraction (nudity immediately separates the actor from the acting), but it might make an interesting dance piece - I wanted as much choreographed movement as possible."
And just for good gay measure, the voiceover is by Derek Jacobi.

Czech animator Jan Svankmajer strikingly original 1998 interpretation of Lewis Carroll's classic tale combines live action with stop-motion animation. Svankmajer's Alice remains true to Carroll's original while at the same time bringing his own style and obsessions to it. In this scene Alice encounters the creepy taxidermy White Rabbit and follows him to Wonderland.
In this scene, Alice meets the Caterpillar who gives her some advice.
In this scene Alice enters the Court and meets the Queen Of Hearts.

Or is it? the internet is currently having an animated debate (see what I did there?) about whether this is really a stop-motion animation or a computer animated fake. For the moment, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt, partly because they show you how they did it at the end of the video, but mostly because they are the same guys who made this equally impressive stop-motion which I posted way back.

We've seen some of this stuff before, but this clip from New Zealand comes with a 'how it's made' video - three months, 2,200 photos, and a lot of paint and patience.

The Scala & Kolacny Brothers atmospheric choir version of Radiohead's Creep, which was used so effectively on the trailer for The Social Network, has been given an appropriately creepy video.

This clip, made to accompany The Kinks classic You Really Got Me Going was recently dug out of the vaults of ABC in Australia. It features Sindy and Action Man (Barbie and GI Joe?) getting freaky.
