It can be fun to follow some celebrities on Twitter, depending on the celeb of course. Like everyone else on Twitter I follow Stephen Fry, and I follow Dolly of course. And a handful of others. A few I ended up 'unfollowing' because their tweets drove me mad. Celebrities can be extremely needy, and sometimes when they first discover Twitter they are waaaay too eager. They've suddenly found a way to communicate to the world without having to go through the nasty press, and they won't shut up, and it's all one big cry of "LOVE ME!". I had to unfollow Boy George. I also had to unfollow Sinead O'Connor because even I found the incessant tweeting about anal sex too much! Though I believe she quit Twitter anyway.
I also follow Lord Sugar (I started following him when I was watching the last season of The Apprentice) even though I've been meaning to unfollow him for ages, mostly just because his tweets are usually about football or are smarmy celeb in-joking with Piers Morgan. Dull stuff, but occasionally he reveals himself to be a prick. Generally I think he comes across quite well on The Apprentice, but of course that's the plan. However on Twitter - where there is no editor between the public and the tweeter - celebrities often reveal themselves in all their tawdry, uninteresting, flawed, mean-spirited, humanity.
This tweet form Sugar about sixteen year old Janet Devlin on the X Factor caught my eye:

I wasn't the only one who noticed it. Another user picked him up on it and Sugar's responses are gross. The crack about the tent at St Paul's (a reference to the Occupy movement in London) is particularly revealing - because obviously the guy must be a useless hippy leftie pinko commie.
(As you probably know, read the exchange from the bottom up)

The indie gays are all ragin'. He doesn't have many 'followers' yet, so if you're on Twitter you should, 'cos you know in a day or two he'll have millions.

The "trending topics" on Twitter are often an interesting snapshot of what's exercising the mind of the on-line world. And sometimes it's depressing.
As I type, the number one topic is "things darkies say". What the feck? In 2009?! (It appears to be a South African thing too).
The second most popular is "Maine" which is a reference to the defeat of gay marriage legislation in that US state (the gays are all over Twitter).
The third is "Sesame Street" which is celebrating it's 40th anniversary.
But seriously, things darkies say????!!
UPDATE: I see it has suddenly disappeared from the trending topics list. I guess someone in Twitter HQ took notice.
